When to Change the Timing Chain

2024-04-11

Timing belts require routine replacement, but timing chains do not. Unless the timing chain is broken, stretched, or otherwise compromised, there’s no reason to change it. However, if the timing chain is experiencing issues, your car may exhibit one or more symptoms.

Common signs of a failing timing chain include:

1. Timing chain noise

2. Engine misfire and poor performance

3. Difficulty starting the vehicle

4. Illuminated check engine light

5. Engine vibration or shaking when idling

6. Engine won’t start

You may hear a noise emanating from the timing chain cover area, often caused by a loose timing chain resulting from a faulty timing chain tensioner, guide, or other issues.

Ignoring these early signs may lead to more serious problems. Therefore, it's crucial to inspect the timing chain as soon as you notice any unusual noise.
